The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have deployed the Taltan unit, dedicated to autonomous logistics operations using drones, robotic vehicles, and unmanned platforms to transport supplies, equipment, and even attack enemy structures without exposing soldiers to risk.

Created four months ago, Taltan is part of the IDF’s Technology and Logistics Directorate and was established to address the challenge of sustaining troops in complex terrain under constant threat.

The unit is divided into two areas: operations and development. In the first, drones and ground vehicles are remotely operated to transport loads, explosives, or destroy enemy targets. The second focuses on engineers and specialists who expand Taltan’s capabilities, such as fuel transport and safe methods for entering hostile territory. Systems used include drones carrying up to 30 kg, platforms like the “Genie” with a 250 kg capacity, and robotic APCs supporting up to three tons.

According to Taltan commander Lieutenant Colonel Z., the unit is already operational in places such as Gaza, where it delivers meals, water, and equipment daily to isolated troops. The use of autonomous systems has made supply delivery faster and safer, with aerial drops in minutes reaching up to 15 km beyond the border.

The initiative aims to reduce risks for soldiers while ensuring essential resources reach troops even in high-risk environments.
